Lu's career in Hospitality Design began in 1980 at Western International Hotels (now known as Westin Hotels), after graduating from the very highly rated College of Architecture at Arizona State University in 1979, with a BDS Bachelor of Design Science in Interior Architecture and Design. Lu has also taken graduate courses in Lighting Design. Lu was a staff Interior Designer at Westin Hotels for four years.

Lu gained invaluable insight and experience after he left Westin Hotels, and for the next 12 years was the Head Interior Architectural Designer in the Contract Design Departments of The Brodie/Dohrman Co. (8yrs)  and Bargreen/Ellingson (4 years Seattle Branch). These companies are design and supply type businesses that provide restaurant and foodservice design and planning as well as budget, price out, sell, and provide installation services for the projects they undertake. Lu was responsible for driving and implementing the design, sales, pricing, coordination and supervision of manufacturers reps., coordination with in-house company reps. for smallwares and other project related items, and hands on field supervision and project management of installation for the projects Lu was responsible for.

Lu's distinct advantage over other Hospitality Design Firms is that he has in-depth knowledge and relationships with food service equipment reps; custom millwork shops; custom stainless steel fabricators; booth and furniture manufacturers; and other resources for direct pricing and purchasing at substantial cost savings for our clients. Lu went back to strictly fee based Hospitality Design Services when he joined Connell Design Group. Lu, as Principal for Hospitality Facilities  (4 years) was heavily involved with a new Owner and two other Principals in growing the firm from (8) to (20) staff in approximately two years. During this time Lu's Hospitality Design Studio grew from one to as many as four staff members. Lu was also involved with helping re-brand the firm; developing design and CAD standards for his studio; marketing development and input for his studio; and developing and negotiating fee contracts with his clients and other studio's at Connell Design Group depending on the project scope of work.

Lu started his own design firm in 2002 and has grown his own firm ever since.

Over the past 30 plus years, he has been involved with all aspects of the hospitality design industry and has written hospitality design related articles for publications including Hospitality News. 

Lu's Hospitality Design expertise includes: strategic consulting, site assessment and due diligence, prototype design and adaptation, theme design, interior design, food service planning and specifications, custom foodservice and architectural millwork design, custom foodservice stainless steel design, lighting design and specifications, project budgeting, construction documentation and specifications, construction administration and project management.
